The Mountain of Ants

A fun trail to explore on the Helledraye Massif

The Helledraye massif offers several hiking trails, as well as places to relax, just a few minutes from the centre of Bruyères. The Montagne des Fourmis walk is very popular with families because it is not very difficult (except for a climb at the start) and allows you to discover superb views of the town, the castle, the Avison and the surrounding mountains.

It was in 2002 that the mountain of ants trail was created on the Massif de l'Helledraye. This marked hike of about four kilometers is very popular with familiesDotted with large-scale ant sculptures and explanatory panels on the life of these insects, this fun trail in the middle of the forest is enjoyable at any time of year.

Ants are everywhere and some wooden, resin or metal specimens measure almost two meters. You will come across them along the route or in the trees.

You will learn everything about the life, habits, social organization and diet of this animal.

There’s nothing quite like a playground and picnic tables offer regular stops throughout the route.

Not to be missed, the magnificent “point of day” which reveals a bird’s eye view of the town of Bruyères.

To venture even further...

In the Helledraye massif, near the Montagne des Fourmis, we invite you to discover the site of the American Monument and the clearing of remembrance which pay tribute to the Japanese-American soldiers who came to liberate Bruyères in October 1944.
